...and Michael Bentine isn't anywhere to be seen.
Colchester 5th Winter Ale Festival. The best attended winter festival yet - number 5 saw over 2,300 people head through the doors of the Colchester Arts Centre. Between us we supped over 8,000 pints of ale and cider, served up by over 50 different volunteers. We once again ran out of festival glasses even though we ordered loads more than last year.
Thanks to everyone who came to support the festival - on both sides of the bar.
And now... the results have been counted... your ale of the festival, top of the pile out of the 112 that graced the arts centre is....
The votes are in and the results have been counted...
Thank you to everyone who voted, in the end we had far more than in previous years. It's great that so many more members have been able to contribute to the awards andere. 52 different pubs were nominated in the voting - a third of the branch's pubs!
The first brew has rolled out of the doors of Colchester Brewery and into the cellars of a number of pubs around Colchester. The first beer, called No.1 (what's the next one going to be called Tom?) is a glorious bitter which as of last night could be found in the Five Bells at Colne Engaine and The Thatcher's Arms at Mount Bures (our newly crowned Pub of the Year).
So you enjoy our regular Thursday evening real ale runabouts but wish they could be a bit longer? We have the answer, starting in April there's the new bigger and better Sunday Runabouts. It's the same formula as a Thursday night runabout - with the help of CCVS's minibuses we'll deliver you to to a range of real-ale pubs. Simple.
There's four Sunday Runabouts on the calendar at the moment so keep your diary clear. Finer details will be confirmed nearer the time.
Once upon a time (4th March 2012 at 1100 hours) Colchester CAMRA members assembled outside GALA bingo. This was the meeting place not the activity for the day I hasten to add! People bundled straight onto the two Community minibuses for fear of being washed or swept away by the wind and rain caused by the special weather system that GB loves to talk about so much! Once everyone was seated and had their seatbelts fastened we set off. As we neared our destination it became obvious that our destination was not obvious!
Ted's first tour of 2012 was probably his best yet - and he's set a very high standard on his previous days out 'round Town. Two people have put finger to keyboard to write up the day.
Ted takes up the tale first....
Saturday 16th June saw Nigel, Robin, Peter, Rob, Matt, Keith, Dave, Colin and myself meet up at the station for the 10.30 train to London. On arrival we walked up to Moorgate station and took the Northern Line to Camden Town.
We need to survey our pub's beer range and opening times for a upcoming CAMRA project. If you're in the know then please find the pub page in our database and follow the 'Let us know...' link.
Cheers!
The Foundry Arms on Artillery Street in the South East of Colchester is now serving beers from Colchester Brewery. As of last night Colchester No. 1 is on at £2 a pint with Red Diesel next up.
Pub news: If you have any branch pub news then please let us know.

Yesterday, 12th December 2012 saw CAMRA's biggest single day of action when over 1,200 members and publicans lobbied Westminster to raise awareness of the plight of the British Pub and ask for the scrapping of the Beer Tax Escalator.
Anglia TV covers the story from a local angle: http://www.itv.com/news/anglia/update/2012-12-12/the-beer-tax-battle/
