Over to John Norton of the White Horse, Edwardstone to explain all...
In 1997 former landlord Cliff bought the White Horse from Greene King and in the process the pub became a Freehouse, this allowed Cliff to buy beer from who he wanted. Cliff loves dark beers so the first thing he did was hold a dark beer festival. This tradition continues today and every year in the first weekend in May we hold a beer festival to celebrate the diversity in dark beers. Since 1997 a lot has changed and we now brew our own beer in site at the Mill Green Brewery. At the festival we will have 24 beers available, some we brew ourselves but the rest this year are completely new to us here at the White Horse.
We believe this is one of the longest running pub beer festivals in the country and certainly one of the only ones focused to dark beer.
Dark beers get their colour though heavily kilned malted barley and when blended with paler malts and aromatic hops give strong flavours shop. These flavours include coffee, dark fruits, vanilla, leather, chocolate, ash, roasted nuts and dried fruit; the diversity is amazing. A this years festival we have Milds, Stouts, Porters and a Black IPA we even have a New Zealand brewed Porter that has been aged in Pinot Noir barrels for 4 months!
As well as the beer we have live music throughout the weekend and are serving food all day.
